News10's Duffy Kelly remembers the day she helped save Lucky Pal

Days removed from a “life threatening” encounter with an enraged turkey, News10’s Duffy Kelly never imagined she would again be involved in an incident with an animal that would capture the attention of so many people.  Then, on Monday morning, a call came into the KXTV newsroom reporting an accident involving a car striking a horse near Wilton, Calif.

What follows is Kelly’s personal account of that day and how it has affected her.

About 6 a.m. A call came in to the news center about an accident involving a car and a horse.  The unusual nature of the incident intrigued our dispatcher and he asked me to investigate the story following the morning newscast.

Lucky Pal: The journey of a young horse left for dead

Lucky Pal: The journey of a young horse left for dead

When a report came into News10 about a dead horse that had been hit by a car in Wilton, California, it seemed to be another in an increasingly large number of animal abandonment cases.

But when News10 producer, Duffy Kelly, arrived at the scene, she discovered the horse was not dead, but badly injured and in shock. Following requests for authorities on hand to contact a vet, Duffy took matters into her own hands.

What followed was an ongoing story of compassion, perseverance, and an outpouring of support from people gripped by the story.

But the story of this horse, now affectionately named Lucky Pal, is far from over.

What might the future hold for this horse that was left for dead along the side of the road that October morning?

Find out in a News10 special report, A Horse’s Journey, airing Thursday night at 11 p.m.
