Weekly Challenge: The First Look, a life coaching challenge

 The Daily Look

How many times a day do you look in the mirror? Be honest! Maybe not a close look, but at least a glance or reflection in a mirror? Probably a lot, right? And when you do see your reflection, how often do you think (or even say) something negative about yourself?

Negative self-talk is something most of us do without even thinking about it. Somewhere along the line, many of us become our own worst critics, far harder on ourselves than we would ever be of others.

There is an old saying: you teach others how to treat you. But really, when you say negative things to yourself about yourself, aren't you teaching yourself how to treat you?

Va Va Vroom Meets the Crocker

Mel Ramos’ Phantom Lady

By Ashley Bradley

Even though I’ve lived in Sacramento for nearly four years, I had yet to visit the Crocker Art Museum, that is until the Va Va Vroom Art Mix event.

I’ll admit, I don’t know much about art, and a lot of it is over my head, but I do know a little something about pop culture... Read More

For those of us plagued with this “problem,” enter RentTheRunway.com – an online, shopping mecca of designer dresses for rent (ranging from Tibi and Lily Pulitzer to Herve Leger and Narcisco Rodriguez) ranging from $30 – $400 (!!).

How it works: Search their extensive inventory by color, shape, size and/or type of event, and “heart” your favorite choices for comparison. 30 is the New 20

30 is the New 20

By Nina Hajian

When a girl turns 21 she automatically feels a sense of empowerment. Not only can she can legally drink, but now she can also go to bars and clubs to really see what her options are. I remember getting drunk with my friends at 21. We would flirt with older guys and chain smoke cigarettes. We were 21!  Thinking about our skin and health wasn’t a priority at that time (or that we were going to look like that forever).

And from time to time our conversations would turn away from who was being a bitch at work or what guy recently broke our hearts to what life was going to be like at 30..  30 seemed so old back then! I used to think that by 30 I would be living in New York City, married or close to it, and hosting TRL. Back then I was gunning for Carson Daly’s job!

Now, I’m at the age of 30… and only one of those things is close to true... Read More

Places to Meet Men in Sacramento

Places to Meet Men in Sacramento

Smooth…Real Smooth.

By Rachel Smith

Historians will have you believe that the early settlers came to Sacramento to find gold, build a better life, and sleep with John Sutter-err-in his Fort. I personally think that people just so happened to end up here because they got wasted on the train in Utah and woke up when it stopped at its final destination: SacTown!

Today, Sacramento is home to much more than trains, Sutter’s Fort, and a Pony Express statue. We have some of the best outdoor activities and nightlife a town could offer. That’s actually not true, but since this is “Girls on the Grid” I’ve been told I can only write positively about Sacramento so let’s just pretend it’s true.

Some of the greatest love stories have been written in this wonderful town. Look at Lois Hart and Dave Walker. Governor Schwarzenegger and his maid... Read More

Sacramento Job Corps

Sacramento Job Corps

Everyone looking for employment in the Sacramento region should look into Sacramento Job Corps. A very good friend of mine told me about r story about her experience attending Job Corps in Sacramento.  She had no idea there was help out there to give her an education and place her in housing. My friend was a high school drop out for a while, but then realized she needed a change.

Heartbreak Survival Guide

Heartbreak Survival Guide

By Laura Braden

We’ve all been there… Dumped. Cast into the wind. Rejected. Set adrift. Is there anything worse than thinking you’ve found someone who worships you (and will let you worship them right back) to find out you were 120 percent wrong?

Ok, well yes. There actually are way worse things in life – death of a loved one, genocide, human trafficking, dog fighting and Justin Bieber concerts, to name a few. Nothing is guaranteed in life – not happiness, career success, fulfillment or love. And to think that the world owes you a soul mate is the definition of entitled... Read More
