Distracted driving: Multi-tasking behind wheel a dangerous practice

Distracted driving: Multi-tasking behind wheel a dangerous practice

By Marcella Gonsalves

I think by now just about every Sacramento area resident has heard at least one radio ad discouraging them from texting while driving.

Bravo to the public health community and partners for recognizing and swiftly addressing this major concern in our very car-dependent state.

However, while there is a persistent no-text message, it seems like we have absolved talking on the phone (AKA distracted driving).

Drexel University’s psychology department recently did a study that suggests texting while driving is a psychological distract

My 100 Day Raw Food Challenge

By Brandy Neth

If any of you have ever completed a 100 day challenge of any kind, you know this process is intense, exciting, exhilarating, scary, sad and rewarding all at the same time. I’ve completed two 100-day challenges in my life, and I don’t regret either experience.

For my most recent challenge, I decided to “enjoy” a completely raw food diet for 100 days. I know it sounds a little crazy, but everyone knows I’m a bit of an over-achiever at times. So, why exactly did I choose this as my challenge? Simple: it scared the bejezuz out of me. It scared me bad.

Pediatrics mural project warms the hearts of patients and staff

Pediatrics mural project warms the hearts of patients and staff

Last year, the pediatrics department at Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center was looking for a way to spruce up its space while also providing a visual sense of the personalized, nurturing care that its physicians and staff strive to provide. A series of murals on the walls turned out to be the perfect endeavor.

“It really speaks to what the providers want for their patients in terms of making them feel comfortable when they come in,” said Christie Monette, director of pediatrics. When the search for an artist began, Sean Cooke, MD, the department’s assistant chief at Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento, recommended his mother for the job.

Leann Cooke, a 70-year-old artist and retired school teacher, was excited to volunteer her time to the project—a farm scene mural—but admits to having been awed by the size of the wall space she’d been handed.

Sutter Dietitian Tasks Patients to Take Action in National Nutrition Month

Sutter Dietitian Tasks Patients to Take Action in National Nutrition Month

One in three adults is obese in America and Sutter Health registered dietitians are taking advantage of national nutrition month to raise awareness of the many strategies to combat the obesity epidemic.

“You can reach healthy weight goals by making gradual, healthy and reasonable changes in your eating and activity,” said Debbie Lucas, Registered Dietitian with Sutter Options for Success, one of the medical weight loss programs in the new Sutter Weight Management Institute.

In order to lose weight it is important to eat a healthy diet. What does that mean? “Eating less fat and fewer calories than what you are currently taking in.” says Lucas. “There are three ways to do it: eat high-fat, high-calorie foods less often, or in smaller amounts, or eat  lower-fat, lower-calorie foods instead.”

She says being physically active must be a priority.

Sutter Doctor Among First in US to be Accredited in Obesity Medicine

The American Board of Obesity Medicine conducted the first obesity medicine certification examination in Nov. 2012.  John Hernried, M.D., medical director for the Sutter Weight Management Institute, is one of 226 physicians across the U.S. who is now board certified in obesity medicine.

“With more than 30 percent of the U.S. adult population obese, no field of medicine is immune from the complications associated with obesity. Physicians certified in Obesity Medicine are able to positively impact all systems of the body by incorporating weight management in their traditional models of medical practice,” says Dana Rasis Brittan, Executive Director of the American Board of Obesity Medicine.

As obesity becomes a more prevalent social issue, it also becomes a more pertinent issue for physicians and health care. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of U.S. adults are obese.
