Build A Better Easter Basket

Build A Better Easter Basket

Elizabeth Smith

Here comes Peter Cottontail. Hoppin’ down the bunny trail. Hippity hoppity baskets of ho-hum goods are on the way. Traditional Easter confections with neon-colored candies and bland bunnies disappoint my kids no matter how excited they (okay, we) are for our baskets. So I’ve gathered recommendations from experts here at Whole Foods Market®, as well as our friends at SAVUER and Kiwi magazine so we can all easily build a better basket without well…laying an egg!

Candy Quandaries
Candy-laden Easter baskets are an essential at my house but we could do without all the unnecessary ingredients. If you too are hunting for great-tasting treats you can feel good about, all these confections meet Whole Foods Market’s quality standards — no artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, preservatives or hydrogenated fats.

Fly Your Carpet Over to Ali Baba's Kabob House.

Fly Your Carpet Over to Ali Baba's Kabob House.

AushakI am a very unobservant person. Oftentimes it is several months before I notice a new business or a new landmark. Not this time. I saw Afghani food mentioned on a sign and I was suddenly very aware. As in, checking every other day to see if the place had opened yet.

Ali Baba's takes over the small, nondescript place at the corner of 7th & L streets that had formerly been occupied by an Indian restaurant. In its first couple of days I saw it was open and immediately stopped in to try them out.

Tomato Bacon Jam from Micah Kasman of ABC’s “The Taste”

Tomato Bacon Jam from Micah Kasman of ABC’s “The Taste”

Recently, I wrote about attending a local viewing party at Restaurant Thir13en for ABC’s new hit cooking competition show “The Taste” with my colleagues John Armato and Jenna Buhagiar. In addition to meeting “The Taste” contestant Chef Adam Pechal of Restaurant Thir13en, we were also lucky enough to meet another contestant, Micah Kasman, who was on hand for the event. Although Micah was sent home from “The Taste” a few weeks back, he was generous enough to share one of his favorite recipes with us for SacFoodies!

Thus, we bring you this recipe for Tomato Bacon Jam (aka “TBJ”), courtesy of Micah Kasman. (Micah’s tip: slather TBJ on a burger or add to a delicious, oozy grilled cheese sandwich, as shown here)... Read More
