When I was asked whether I would promote Rethink Your Drink on my blog, it was a no brainer! It's a cause I fully support and practice as much as possible. The premise? Stop drinking sugary drinks and just drink water instead.
This coming from a person who doesn't like water! You see, when I was growing up in Saudi Arabia we had two kinds of water. Hard water was used for yards and washing. Soft water was for drinking. Our kitchen sink had two taps then, one for hard and one for soft. Needless to say, I wasn't a fan of drinking water. I would drink milk, juices, and our quota of one soda a day. My mom rationed everything out. Two cookies, one SlimJim, and one soda allowed per day.
I'm also really bad about drinking enough through the day. I have to conscientiously make the effort to drink. And when I do drink, it's water as much as I can now. I do have to drink it room temperature though. For some reason, can't do ice water.
The point is, there is so much evidence now that sugary drinks are bad for you. And there is more and more evidence that cancer cells thrive and survive off of eating sugar in your bloodstream. Yes, I still drink juices, but I usually cut them in half with water. Our juices are too sweet! I also still have strong desires for sodas. But I realized long ago that my addiction was to the fizz and not the flavoring. Now I drink sparkling water or I just add lemon juice or one of my vinegar shrubs to soda water. Problem solved.
The Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Collaborative is working in the 14-county Gold Country region of Northern California to educate the public on making the switch to drinking water instead of sweet drinks. There's even a Rethink Your Drink pledge - Can you pledge to drink only water for the next 30 days? I took the pledge but I'd be lying if I said it was going to be easy.
There's even a sugar calculator so you can see just how much there is in your drink. Or have you seen the commercial where they pour a soda and then ask - "You wouldn't eat 22 packets of sugar, so why are you drinking them?"
Please make the lifestyle change that you know is not only simple, but healthier, and cost effective. Think of all the money you'll save not buying those drinks but carry a water bottle instead.
Check out the Rethink Your Drink webpage. I found it to be very interesting to click through some of the tools.
