Sacramento - How Do I Love Thee?

Sacramento - How Do I Love Thee?

Repost from 2010. Seemed appropriate due to recent SacMag article.

I am a Sacramento transplant and yet I often feel I love Sacramento more than some Sacramento natives.

I have a multi-cultural background and have lived in many places. Right before Sac I had been in college in Portland. There were plenty of Californians there and many of the Southern Californians would say that Sacramento/Stockton and the central valley were 'the armpit of California'. So I didn't have big expectations when I arrived. The reason I came was because I had a free place to live care-taking a condo for close family friends. Then I got married and ended up staying.

Growing up the longest I stayed anywhere was 16 years in Saudi Arabia. So if you asked me, I would have called Saudi 'home'. Now, since Sac is the longest I've lived anywhere, I am proud to call Sacramento my home.

In the 23 years I've been here I've seen the area grow considerably... Read More

Kaiser Permanente employees make it a true season of giving throughout the community

Kaiser Permanente employees make it a true season of giving throughout the community

The holiday season is one of many times throughout the year when the people of Kaiser Permanente come together to touch the lives of those in the community.

Physicians and staff in the greater Sacramento region helped make it a happy holiday for those in need, giving to dozens of projects from toy and book drives to shoe and food collections. Some physicians even took children on their own shopping sprees.

Kaiser Permanente doctors and several departments were among those who jumped into action to help at the last minute when a local agency was short gifts for some of its clients. A truck loaded with more than 200 presents donated by Kaiser Permanente staff was delivered to families in the Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center (SAEHC).

Railroad Museum to Commemorate Historic Date in Railroad History

Railroad Museum to Commemorate Historic Date in Railroad History

One hundred and fifty years ago – on January 8, 1863 – California Governor Leland Stanford turned a ceremonial shovelful of earth near the intersection of Front and K Streets in what we today know as Old Sacramento. This marked the starting point for the Central Pacific Railroad, one of two companies that together would construct America’s first transcontinental railroad.  To commemorate the inception of one of the United States’ most significant accomplishments, the California State Railroad Museum will debut a new sign at Front and K Streets on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at 12:30 p.m.

Following the sign unveiling, the nearby California State Railroad Museum will offer an afternoon of special public programs focusing on the First Transcontinental Railroad. Featured speakers include the following: Dr. Richard Orsi, author and professor emeritus of history at California State University, Hayward; Kyle K.
