Signs of Progress...Railroad Technology Museum Project Consultant Starts July 1

Railroad expert Peter Hansen has been named as project consultant for the Railroad Technology Museum, an expansion of the popular California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento which is part of California State Parks. His position, which is effective July 1, 2011, has been added by the California State Railroad Museum Foundation to assist California State Parks in the development of the project.

Hansen has a long and impressive background as a rail historian, exhibit curator, lecturer and writer.  His extensive work history includes serving as editor and publisher of Railroad History -- the journal of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society -- for the past four years, and also as a correspondent for Trains magazine.

Denio’s awards annual education scholarship to local students

ROSEVILLE – Denio’s Roseville Farmers Market & Swap Meet announced today that employees Marisa Mollera, Joshuah Kerby and Jessica Decoque have been named the recipients of the 2011 Denio’s Scholarship.

The education award is given annually to young employees who are excelling in the classroom, show initiative while working at Denio’s, and have also been active in community service. All three employees received a $1,000 scholarship from Denio’s to help offset the costs of college.

All three teens have been employed by Denio’s for over a year and work in food service.

“What I loved about all three of these young people is they are extremely hard workers that are always eager to take on new job responsibilities and accept new challenges,” said Ken Denio, Owner of Denio’s Farmers Market & Swap Meet.

Jerry Way Receives National APWA Top Ten Public Works Award

Sacramento, CA – The American Public Works Association (APWA) recently awarded the City of Sacramento’s Director of Transportation Jerry Way one of the national 2011 Top Ten Public Works Leaders of the Year. Way has been with the City of Sacramento for more than 30 years and was the APWA Sacramento Chapter President in 2009. Each Top Ten Public Works Leader will be honored during the Awards Ceremony as part of the APWA 2011 International Public Works Congress & Exposition in Denver, Colorado, September 18-21, 2011. Way was also presented the award locally on Thursday, May 19, 2011 by APWA Sacramento Chapter President, Matt Brogan at the Chapter’s 10th Annual National Public Works Week Awards Dinner.

APWA annually recognizes 10 of the most outstanding public works professionals from across the U.S.

American Public Works Association Honors Sacramento’s Lucinda Willcox as Manager of the Year

The American Public Works Association (APWA) Sacramento Chapter recognized Lucinda Willcox as one of three outstanding individuals who represented the best management professionals in public works for 2011 at an annual awards dinner on Thursday, May 19. 

Willcox provides expertise in infrastructure and transportation planning, public administration and management and program development.  During her 20 years of experience, Willcox has revamped the Private Development Fund and has secured tens of millions of dollars in state and federal transportation money. 

“Lucinda inspires excellence and dedication in the public sector,” said APWA Sacramento Chapter President Matt Brogan. “She was selected based on profession, leadership, innovation, agency service, customer service and community service.”  

The APWA also honored Ken Grehm of Placer County and Cedar Kehoe of Elk Grove as Manager of the Year award winners.

American Public Works Association Honors Elk Grove’s Cedar Kehoe as Manager of the Year

The American Public Works Association (APWA) Sacramento Chapter recognized Cedar Kehoe as one of three outstanding individuals who represented the best management professionals in public works for 2011 at an annual awards dinner on Thursday, May 19. 

Before starting her current position as program manager with the City of Elk Grove six years ago, Kehoe was the general manager at the San Francisco Solid Waste Transfer Station.  She was instrumental in the development of the nation’s first Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility and managed the recycling of 59 percent of the waste received at the facility. 

“Cedar inspires excellence and dedication in the public sector,” said APWA Sacramento Chapter President Matt Brogan.

4th graders to 'go to work' on Hyatt Career Day

SACRAMENTO - The 20th annual Camp Hyatt Career Day will take place on Tuesday, May 24 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Sacramento. The event will highlight the job opportunities within the travel and tourism industry for students in the local community.

From shadowing the General Manager and Chef, to learning the ropes from bellman and housekeepers, 4th graders from Genevieve Didion Elementary School will learn every aspect of the hotel's operation in this unique experience.

The students will "go to work" and partner up with a Hyatt associate to shadow his/her morning responsibilities and take a behind the scenes look at how to operate a hotel.
